Leaving on a jet plane, by car

On Thursday, Rosie and Sammy and I drove to Salt Lake City to get Rosie on a plane back to Boston. Didn't take many photos on the drive down.

Ooo, blew out the highlights here.

The Utah capitol building.

Just before Rosie left Jackson

Just before we left Jackson to get Rosie to SLC for a flight back to Boston, we went mountain biking up on Philips Ridge.

The view from the ridge:

The afternoon before leaving, we went for a walk along the Snake River.

A floating log with cool textures.

Some cool metal working art which someone attached to a pair of old bridge columns, though the bridge itself is long gone.

Colorful rocks.

Canoe Camping on the Snake River

Last week, Rosie, Ryland, and I went canoe camping on the Snake River, starting about 65 miles downstream of Jackson. It was awesome.

EDIT: We saw tons of birds...we saw about a half-dozen bald eagles, a few hawks, a number of osprey, a few pelicans, a great blue heron, mergansers, and a mallard. Near the end of the trip we saw a young bald eagle swoop down and grab a fish out of the river right in front of us.

The night before getting on the river, we went car-camping by the Palisades Reservoir, in Ryland's terrific VW campervan.

Gear-explosion at the put-in. Rosie and Ryland paddled the canoe, while I paddled an inflatable kayak known as a (rubber) duckie.

Nervous laughter after a rough section of river.

Our great campsite just above the mouth of Dry Canyon.

And...morning.

Lots of fishing boats out on Saturday.

Snack time on a gravel bar.

Pat up ahead.

A big cliff that looked like it was made of smeared out jello pudding. Pat is at the bottom of the picture if you look closely.

A stuffed animal kept me company for the ride back to our starting point.

A vacation from our vacation -- part 4

On Saturday night, Rosie and I arrived in Bozeman and met up with my cousin Liz. The next day we drove up Hyalite Canyon and hiked up to the lake of the same name, past more waterfalls than I could count.

 Waterfall up in Hyalite Canyon.

Liz and Steve's dog, Zoey.

 A lot of green happening.

So much green...

On Monday we went mountain biking near Bridger Bowl ski area, a trail called Bangtail Divide.

View from the highpoint of the day. Bridger Bowl just out left of this picture.

Steve on the descent.

Switchback near the bottom.

After riding, we went for a swim out in the Gallatin River, then said goodbye to Liz and Steve, caught dinner with Rosie's cousin Jack, then drove back to Jackson late.
