Spring 2015: Skiing Mt Jefferson and King Ravine

A few weeks before Yeuhi, Alex, and I went to Jackson Hole, we did an overnight trip up to the fantastic Grey Knob cabin on Mount Adams.

We got up to the cabin in short order, dropped our heavy gear, then headed over toward Adams via Crag Camp, which hangs over the edge of King Ravine:

Soon after we pulled up, the clouds piled in and it started raining, soon turning to thunder and lightning. We jung out at Crag Camp playing hearts. The rain soon made the telescope sitting on the table there sadly irrelevant.

Eventually the storm settled down and we did a little expedition up the trail and into the N facing snowfields. We even got some decent turns...

until it was time to hack back down the trail to the cabin.

The next morning looked great.

I believe this spot is labeled as the Knight's Castle.

We cruised up to the col between Adams and Sam Adams and ate our lunch...at 9:15.

We skied SW from the col, contouring around Sam Adams. We poked around, and decided to ski down a slope in the vicinity of Adams 5.

But we got choked out after a few hundred feet and skinned back out.

Then Greg, Alex, Yeuhi, and I headed over to Jefferson to see about getting into Jefferson Ravine proper, an area I had wanted to ski for ages. Coz and Glazner decided to ski out and drive home together. The knob in the image below is called Jefferson's Knee, which would make the long smooth slope leading down to it...Jefferson's Thigh?

The Thigh had the best snow of the day--pleasant windbuff. Then we punched over a steep roll dropping into the ravine. Yeuhi's photo:

 The snow was turning firm.

Chillin at the bottom of the run. No trails in or out of this spot. Presumably not much traffic in this area, though on this day we did see two other guys

Greg and I left Yeuhi and Alex behind, as they headed back to the cabin for another night. After we climbed out of the ravine, we hiked and skinned back over to Adams, and picked our way down into King Ravine, which was almost bulletproof.

A classic view from below the boulder field. The ski down the trail was through punchy, rotten, shallow snow.
