Death Canyon Overnight

On Tuesday and Wednesday, Rosie and I went for an overnight in Death Canyon. Like Moe said, Death Canyon is a great place to hike...too bad about that name.

Giant geodesic dandelions are all over out here.

 Wristwatch for scale (you're welcome).

Trail sign damaged by avalanches. This had been replaced when we hiked out about 24 hours later.

Hiking into the canyon mouth.

360 deg panorama. Photosynth link.

My pale white thighs serve as a perfect natural light reflector/diffuser for my face.

We camped above the ranger cabin several miles up the canyon. The next day we cached some of our heavy gear nearby and began heading up Static Peak in graying skies.

A ton of sawdust. I looked around to see what logs a trailcrew must have chainsawed here, but there were no cut logs...

These termites are eating this tree. As I watched, each little termite would walk out of the crack at right carrying a little chunk of wood, toss it casually off into the air, then walk back inside to get more.

Fossil Peak and the Death Canyon shelf.

Rock with eyeballs.

Buck visible in the distance, beyond the nearer crags.

Skies getting gray.

Topped out at the col just N of Albright, ~10,165. Distant thunder and near rain at this point.

We got off the ridge a few hundred feet into the trees at this point and hung out for an hour to see if the storm would blow over. Things were fairly exciting for a while, with thunder, lightning, wind and a bit of rain. We waited for an hour or more, but we were getting cold and decided to go back down.

Tree sap. Static as far as I could see.

 Homemade granola bars.

More rock eyes. Gray this time.

The rain tapered off and it was sunny by the time we got back to the trailhead at 4. Good times, and maybe we'll be back.
